how to grind weed without a grinder
We've all been there: away from home without our most beloved pot-smoking tool, wondering how to grind weed without a grinder.
For many, this feels like being up s*#@ creek without a paddle. But it's really not as bad as all that. In fact, it's a great opportunity to exercise your inner MacGyver and discover new and creative ways to chop your ganja.
In this article, the all-things-cannabis experts at Honest Marijuana reveal 11 novel tools for prepping your pot without a grinder.
Why You Should Break Apart Your Bud In The First Place
There are many good reasons why you should break apart your bud before consuming it.
Not least of which is how in the heck are you going to smoke a cannabis flower that's the size of a fifty-cent piece (for those of you numismatically-challenged folks out there, put your thumb and pointer finger tip to tip for an approximation of the size we're talking about)?
Here are two more compelling reasons why you should always break apart your bud. Whether you use the tool created for the job or figure out how to grind weed without a grinder is up to you.
Potency
Reducing your cannabis to smaller pieces actually makes it more potent. Is it magic? Nope, it's science.
Cutting, grinding, grating, shaving, chopping, or in any other way making your ganja smaller without touching it with your hands prevents your skin from absorbing the trichomes that make marijuana the recreational and medicinal powerhouse that it is.
Kief
Kief is the term cannasseurs use to refer to the terpenes and cannabinoids that separate from the trichomes when you cut your buds into smaller pieces.
What's so great about all that? Kief is one of the purest and most potent parts of the marijuana plant.
It has a tendency to collect like dust on the surface of your cutting tool (along with resin), but you can harvest this pint-sized wonder and add it to everything from bongs to blunts, vaporizers to vape pens, and hookah to honey oil

Do You Absolutely Need A Grinder?
No, you do not need a grinder to get the benefits out of your bud. But it does make things a lot easier.
It's like trying to drive a nail into a board without the right tool. Sure, you could hit the nail with a screwdriver or a wrench or even a rock, but they won't do the job as well as a trusty hammer.
Sometimes, though, you do find yourself without the right tool and contemplating how to grind weed without a grinder.
That's where the following DIY tools come in handy.
How To Grind Weed Without A Grinder: DIY Tools
1) Your Hands
Your hands are the original DIY tool. Countless generations of canna-enthusiasts prepped their weed with nothing but their fingers and thumbs.
You will need to dry and cure your cannabis — you should always do this first, regardless of how you choose to chop it up — and you'll need something to shred it into (a bowl or cookie sheet works well), but that's pretty much all it takes to make some good marijuana even better.
2) Cheese Grater
This is, by no means, our first choice for prepping our weed, but it will do in a pinch.
Find a cheese grater with small holes — the smaller the better — and rub your nug (sounds dirty, doesn't it?) across the surface.
Watch out for your fingers when the flower gets low. Those little holes can shred skin just as easily as they shred buds and cheese.
3) Scissors
No grinder? No problem! Just find a pair of scissors and a small glass — a shot glass is just the right size — and start scissoring (clipping? cutting?).
Size doesn't matter (yeah, we said it!) when choosing your scissors and your glass. We've gotten great "grinding" action (yeah, we said it!) with a wine glass and a pair of Swiss Army Knife scissors.
4) Keys
Like the cheese grater, keys are one of the last DIY tools we'd turn to when trying to figure out how to grind weed without a grinder.
Pretty much everything works better than keys — even your hands — but if you don't want to get your fingers dirty and you can't find any of the other items on this list, then, yeah, give it a shot.
If you're having trouble visualizing how this would work, think of the serrated edge as a tiny saw blade. Proceed accordingly.
Oh, and be sure to clean your keys before (they're really dirty) and after (they'll be covered with resin and kief).
5) Coin And Bottle
You'll need some equipment to make this option work, but it is a good alternative to a grinder. The equipment in question is:
- A small bottle
- A coin (again, cleaned)
We've used both an old film canister (do those even exist anymore?) and a prescription pill bottle (thoroughly cleaned, of course) in the past. As long as it has a lid and it's not something gigantic (like a five-gallon bucket), whatever bottle you can find should work.
Place a coin in the bottle, put on the lid, and start shaking.
Bonus: you can count this as your workout for the day. Two birds with one stone and all that.
6) Credit Card
We once found ourselves naked and alone (but not afraid) in the wilderness with nothing but an ounce of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and a Diners Club card (don't ask where we stored it).
What did we do? We used the credit card to chop our bud and get baked, of course.
This option doesn't work as well as the next option on the list, but then we didn't have a knife, did we?
7) Knife
Really, any sharp cutting edge will work if you find yourself without a proper grinder. Steak knife, paring knife, butcher knife, pocketknife, razor blade — it doesn't matter.
Just make sure the tool is clean (notice the recurring theme?) and that you have a solid surface like a cutting board to work on.
8) Pizza Cutter
We've never used this one ourselves, but we don't see why it wouldn't work.
Place the cannabis flower on a cutting board or cookie sheet and move the pizza cutter back and forth. Repeat until your ganja is the size of oregano.
9) Mortar And Pestle
Mortar what? Pestle huh? Yeah, we know. We've included a picture to put all your questions to rest.
You're not likely to find these items lying around your kitchen, but they've been used to crush, break, and grind plants, herbs, and other solid objects for hundreds of years.
The mortar and pestle method works best if your bud is sufficiently dry. If you've decarboxylated the flowers in an oven already, you should be good to go.
10) Coffee Grinder
If you're not into the whole manual labor thing, the next two options should be right up your alley. Up first: the coffee grinder.
A coffee grinder gives you a quick and easy way to shred your Mary Jane into confetti with the touch of a button.
You really need to clean the grinder before and after or your ground pot and the cups of coffee that come after it are going to taste, smell, and feel a lot different than normal (which could be a good thing).
11) Blender
This option has a tendency to turn marijuana into powder, but if you've got a large quantity to shred, go for it.
When you're done grinding and you've removed as much of the cannabis as possible, throw in some spinach, fruit, and yogurt and whip up a tasty ganja smoothie. Yum!
Quality In, Quality Out
Armed with these DIY tools for grinding weed without a grinder, you should never be left high and dry again with no way to prep your bud for consumption.
